Call to Artists - UnMasking the Beauty of Trash

unMASKing the Beauty of Trash

An Art Exhibit of Masks Made from Repurposed Materials

reCREATE Grand Opening Art Show and Fundraiser

reCREATE invites artists of all ages to give new life to  unwanted or salvaged materials by creating a one-of-a-kind mask for the local nonprofit’s reCREATE Art Center opening reception to be held October 24, 2009. Masks accepted for entry must be made from at least 75 percent material that is being diverted or salvaged from the waste stream and will be displayed for sale during the opening celebration for the new reCREATE location at 414 Vernon Street, Suite 110, Roseville, with 35 percent of each sale going to support the nonprofit.

“The masks are a creative way to express our focus on reuse—finding new uses for unwanted materials,” said reCREATE Executive Director Donna Sangwin. “We look forward to sharing the artists’ imaginative ideas during our opening celebration and encourage all ages to participate in the project. Share your creativity and inspire your community!”

The mask project is in keeping with the reCREATE goal of raising awareness about the amount of waste that goes into landfills every day, including many items someone else might be able to use.  The organization has successfully carried its reuse message to more than 2,250 students in local schools and to countless children who have enjoyed reCREATE art booths at community events.  The reCREATE Art Center opens up a new avenue by providing a dedicated space for classes, birthday parties and other events, as well as a store where people can shop for low-cost items they can put to new use.

Masks can be two- or three-dimensional, and the types of items used on the mask is left up to each artist.  “There are a few practical limits on what we can accept for display at the event,” said Sangwin, such as mask sizes and weights.  We also ask that artists create masks that are appropriate for people of all ages to view. But within those limits, we encourage boundless creativity.”

An entry fee of $10 is required for each artist entered.  To get full details on entering a mask, visit www.recreate.org/art  or call Donna Sangwin at 916.770.9880

Women are aware that an ideal body weight and proper nutrition provide them with the energy they require in order to stay vibrant and healthy. An ideal body weight is really a range that is within the boundaries of good health.
